A solar-powered toilet that generates hydrogen and electricity designed by California Institute of Technology in the United States won the first prize in Reinvent the Toilet, a competition for next-generation toilets to improve sanitation in the developing world, carried out by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

In a move toward greater transparency and following in Apple and Google’s footsteps, Facebook has revealed for first time its carbon footprint during 2011.
Facebook’s Carbon & Energy Impact Report provides details about the company’s carbon footprint, energy mix, and energy use for all of its offices and data centers. The apparently non-stop growth of the company will have an impact on its carbon footprint, so the company has also outlined its clean energy commitments, setting a goal to acquire at least 25% of its energy from clean and renewable sources by 2015, in order to maximise efﬁciency and align the business decisions with the environment. As reported, the company will include renewable energy component to every new data center it builds, mentioning its solar pv installation at Prineville data center as an example of next projects.

Edinburgh’s Telford College, a Scottish College at the forefront of developing training opportunities in the burgeoning renewables industry, is fitting up to 650 solar panels and introduce a range of other novel low carbon technologies on its West Granton Road main campus, which will generate enough energy to allow it to become self-sufficient in power and to showcase it as a UK role model for an energy – efficient building.
The project will mean the college can significantly reduce its power bills and will be able to sell surplus electricity to the National Grid, allowing it to reduce its reliance on government funding. At the same time, present and future students, as well as architects, designer and engineers, will also be able to gain unique ‘real environment’ training in renewable energy and in developing self-sufficient buildings.

The amount of electricity generated from renewables increased a 33% during the year, standing at 34,410 GWh in the end of 2011. At the same time, the UK generation capacity increased by 3.1 GW – another 33% – going up to 12.3 GW. (more…)
Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, has recently published some data about the renewable energy share of the European Union members. Still with some missing data, the energy from renewable resources in 2010 was estimated to be around 12.4% of the gross final energy consumption, compared with 11.7% in 2009 and 10.5% in 2008.
According to Eurostat report, the highest contributors to the share of renewables in 2009 were Sweden (48%), Latvia(34.3%), Finland (31.1%), Portugal (24.6%) and Estonia (23%), and the lowest Malta (0.2%), Luxembourg (2.8%), the United Kingdom (2.9%) and the Netherlands (4.1%).
Swedish company IKEA has announced its plans to install solar photovoltaic panels on all its buildings in China over the next three years, as part of its goal to only use renewable energy to power its facilities.
Once finished, the solar panels installations will provide up to 15% of the electricity needed in all the IKEA stores, as well as 100% of its distribution centers in China, larger buildings that require less energy. As a result, the home furnishing company will save around 6,000 of carbon dioxide emissions per year. (more…)

About a third part of the UK farmers will be using some kind of renewable energy by August 2012 – when The Green Deal will be introduced -, a study has just revealed. Published by the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and NatWest, this report confirms the agricultural sector bet for renewables, as demand for solar panels, wind turbines and other renewables has increased during the last months.
After surveying more than 400 farmers, solar installations proved the most popular option with one in six farmers claiming they will have solar PV systems installed by the end of this summer, and farmers in the East of England and the Midlands have a 5% uptake of wind turbines. Renewable heat technologies, such as biomass boilers or anaerobic digestion plants, are also expected to be in place at around 10% of farms by the end of the summer. (more…)
